The URL you enter should the the URL that you want people to 'like'.

I followed the instructions to the letter but was left with no visible change to the page.

Not quite none on a second look. I get a transparent rectangle which can be selected. There is a pop up associated with it which says Widget edit.
I will try it all again and see if there is anything else that I can think of.
BTW This might be a daft question but should I be dragging the widget from the gallery into the rectangle? The rectangle at 450px wide is pretty big BTW.

Got it this time. I dropped the widget on to the rectangle. I might have been fooled by the fact that the widget is not visible at all on the WD page. That fact makes it really difficult to position on the page to look right. I am there though.
