Xara Outsider design competition.
In the latest Xara Outsider competition:

I note that one site is using Facebook to generate votes:

I hardly see this as a fair competition. What say you?

...or the opportunity to spam ;))
But then a comp like this is an open invitation to be an opportunist as it's unlikely any of the entrants would care about $100 of Magix or Xara software?? They already have what it takes (WD or Xtreme) to enter the comp in the first place.
Or did the rules say it was fine to use a trial version ?
I agree though, not fair - but will Xara care?
Re: Xara Outsider design competition.
I have to say I'm on the fence on this one. It doesn't cost anything to set up a Facebook page for your business and as far as I know there isn't anything in the contest rules that says you can't use your facebook page so there really isn't anything stopping any of the other entrants from doing the same. How ever Facebook also has ads that you have to pay for, so if they are advertising their Facebook page with paid for ads then I would say it would definitely be crossing the line. It would be interesting to hear from someone at Xara on this. Perhaps some clarification of the rules?

I think the point here is:

Asking Facebook pals to vote for you based on their lemming-like behaviour is not really a conscientious vote, what do they care about good design and best use of Xara software. Winning a design competition based on farcebook votes is winning nothing you don't already have - sheep.
No - it's a spoiling the spirit of the 'design' competition.
Re: Xara Outsider design competition.
I do think it goes against the spirit of the competition and is unfair on the rest, but I don't think Xara/Magix will mind a bit of free publicity. ;)

Back on topic, in fairness it's the company putting it on Facebook and touting for votes, not the designer.
Re: Xara Outsider design competition.
Who is the designer John?
Re: Xara Outsider design competition.
Point taken - s/he may not be freelance but an employee
Re: Xara Outsider design competition.
Egg,
Agreed. Not in the spirit of the competition.
Jim
PS: I didn't vote for that site ;)
