It sure would be nice to be able to program
your own shortcut settings into Xara,
like in Expression or 3dsmax you can
create your own. So I have the m,n,b
buttons for add node, node, and bspline
tools, and a host of others, all at my fingertips, in xara I have to SHIFT and function key just to get the hand tool, then F2 for the arrow selection tool, meaning for shift function keys I have to let go of my mouse or wacom pen. I`d rather have them close to eachother for quicker actions.
IF we could get his functionality it would be great. I hope it gets added to the wish list of addins to coming releases of Xara X. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Sounds to me like you would be happier using Expression and 3dsmax, MarkieJ :-)
I always say, once you stop trying to make a program like some other program, and learn to work the way the new program works, your life will become easier and things will go faster and smoother.
Just my 2 cents of course.

For me I just click on the button for that tool. I use shortcuts for the 'combine shapes' options or use the space bar to toggle between a tool and the selector tool.
For the most times I just click on the button. I've re-arranged the button layout and added extras buttons from the button palette. You could also create a custom toolbar with your most used tools and have it nearby in your work area.
(just my 2 cents too)

The ability to set our own hotkeys is something several of us have asked for.
Keyboarding is often faster and more efficient than mousing. Plus, some of us need to minimize mousing to lessen repetitive strain. If you're using multiple apps at the same time, it helps to be able to standardize your hotkeys across applications.
OTOH, Gary's right. It's a good idea to get to know a new app before you start trying to change it.
And while it won't eliminate your need for three hands, Bob's suggestion about customizing toolbars will help.

You can program this thing to do the same quick key strokes from application to application.
I have attached my Xara profile for this. Feel free to modify it as necessary.
This will enable you to get around the Xara's currently weird shortcut keys.
And Gary, I do feel that Xara should allow it's users to change the quick keys. Maybe Xara does things differently as a corporate philosophy, but quick keys is an area where commonality would be appreciated. It would certainly help cut down on the learning curve.
If 5 or 6 diffferent applications give you the hand tool by using the spacebar, Xara being the one that requires you to press Alt X for the same thing is not an advantage.
With the nostromo, you lefties are unfortunately SOL. I have seen this in the stores for $35.

While I also would love the ability to customize my own keyboard combinations, my work-around is to use a macro utility called MacroExpress.
.joroho.

Sheff, as for hand tool.
Xara can redefine middle mouse button action.
Set it for hand tool and it will be more
comfortable to work.
I always do this.
-
That does work however, I use this device in my left hand and the stylus of my wacom tablet in my right hand.
I don't always use the mouse with Xara.
-
Now this is why I always like to throw
ideas out there, because I like collecting
everyones "bob".
even if its only 2 bob.
they all add up,
The nostromo ! lol, its great,
you know I like the sound of that macroexpress,
thanks for mentioning that Joroho thats awesome!! Do you know if it records macros
off the wacom pen tablet? I`d love to use
that if it records wacom pen gestures.
cheers all
