etc etc.
Reminds me of Bowie's verse:
"Planet Earth is blue, and there's nothing I can do"
If you don't work against time, time often works for you.
Cheers Erik.
I know it needs work still but it was more of an experiment with compositing than anything else,I also learnt a lot about modelling and selection tags and overall lighting from that image
I might have another go at a dragon again soon.
Stu.
I'd love to see dragons...probably one of my favorite 3d past times... =)
Hi Earl.
Ya I like Dragons too but they are really hard to model,a lot of people also dont take into count physics when they make them you know wings too small for body weight etc and I want to make a really good one.I am doing an advanced head and body tutorial at the moment thats really stretching the gray matter and showing a lot of new ways of doing things which I will be able to apply in other areas
Only ten days now until your movie opens too Earl

Indeed, I'd have to agree with you on the modeling of dragons. When I first got into 3d some 5 years ago or so, one of the first projects that I attempted was a full bodied dragon. I still saved the only render I ever made of it... Needless to say, it was a disaster... When I got LightWave I tried another one...by this time I had at least learned a good technique involving point welding and curve creation to get a nice organic look. That second dragon was somewhat of a sucess...but I still refer to it as my 'beta' piece. A year ago I started on what was going to be the final version of this dragon (which has a long story behind it as well). That was when NewTek released version 6 of LightWave...between the new tools and more experience, I finally felt as though this one would be it. Unfortunately, work and other things side tracked me, and I haven't touched the model since last May...
I'm hoping to create it from scratch sometime this summer...so hopefully we'll be able to speak 3d dragon talk and perhaps learn something as well.
What I find most interesting about dragons, is that everyone comes up with a different look and style to their dragon. Some are skinny and snake like, others are humanoid with defined muscles and limbs, others are fat and tubby with tiny wings (hehe). And the face...the face is always a treat to look at. No two dragon faces are a like...each one has its own unique style...
All in all, I look forward to seeing your version of this mythological being.
I am looking for something like a T rex sort of design with a few tweaks,I kinda like the idea of a dragon looking something like a Dinosaur with wings
I keep on finding that what I want to model and what I am able to model are two very different things Below is my first Dragon piece the bottom jaw.
On another note I saw a bit of the Final Fantasy movie on the tv tonight...woooooooow...the movement was indistingushable from human the characters were amazing. It was actually quite confusing to watch at first because my eyes were telling my brain that it was human movement they were seeing as it was just so fluid, but also that they were not human characters and it was quite a bizarre sensation at first, but damn that is going to be one incredible movie.
Cheers.

Looks like a great start Stu! Pretty detailed...the more detailed the better on a creature like this...
So you're using Cinema4D for this dragon? Are you modeling it with subdivision surfaces? NURBS? MetaBalls?
Like I said, looks good so far...I look forward to seeing the whole dragon. I must say..texturing will probably be the hardest part. At least, I think so. Something as complicated as this can't be done with a single UV texture (at least, I don't think it's a good idea), yet using traditional methods (planer, cubic, cylindrical, and spherical) would result in a lot of stretching and distortion of the texture... Have you thought about how you're gonna texture this thing yet?
Thanks Earl
I made a texture last night in Photoshop for the skin and it doesnt look too bad with uv mapping I tried other settings and I found that jaw was too varied to accomadate anything but uv as it was cylindrical and spherical and flat etc in the planes on it.I have Bodypaint 3d so I will incooperate that in the finsihed modelling as well and add bits and pieces too it.
I think I will make some pieces in patches so I can vary the mapping and bump maps.
Ya I am using hyper nurbs and just extruding and pulling points in a symmetry object,I shudder to think how much more difficult it would be if it wasnt in a symmetry object I learnt most of my current approach from a human modelling tutorial I am doing I have been progressing for days only to get the model looking good and move onto the eye lids and have a terrible image of what points to pull on and I tried everything in sundry but didnt make any difference.I keep on getting stuck on the next step so I chuck the model and return to the beginning and then I usually progress again But it takes about 4 - 5 hours of modelling to get to that point now,but anyway the human modelling has been brilliant in helping with the Dragon.
Did you see the Dragon movie Dragon Heart? Now that dragon was really well modelled.I also found something interesting when I made a new material and made its name Dragon, the material tab being small only said drago and that was the name of the Dragon Heart dragon and I cant help wondering if that was how the dragon got his name
I will texture the jaw and show you how it looks.
