Indeed, the simple ones can sometimes be the best. I think the combination of the camera angle (looking up at the stairs as though they were a mountain - something I think most people have done at some point as kids), and the placement of the slinkies themselves. Nothing on them looks repetitive or 'faked'. Anyhow, those are two things that come to mind when I see it.

I have thought of animating the slinkie model but never with any seriousness. It would take a little experimenting to come up with the best way to give the coils a natural look while they move.
