Gradients not showing up when I open a pdf file in Xara?
Hi there!
I use Xara Xtreme Pro 3, and when I open a pdf file for editing, the color gradients don't show up. They are definitely there in the pdf file (I can see them in Adobe Reader) but Xara doesn't seem to display them.
Let me know if I can upload images, pdfs, more info, etc
Thanks

Hello mawbts Welcome to Talkgraphics :)
I'm not sure because I don't have XtremePro3 to test with but the pdf filter has been updated since then and I do know that the latest version DesignerPro 7 has no problems with gradients from pdfs. But certainly if you can upload a pdf that shows the problem when you open it someone else may still have that version and be able to test it for you.

Hi, thanks for the help.
The problem may not be with Xara since I try opening it with Inkscape and the gradients also don't display. They're definitely there in the pdf though. I've attached the file so any curious folk can have a look at it. Attachment 85524

its possible that the gradients are actually flat colour objects which import, with overlaid graduated transparency which doesn't import

The application used to create the graphic clipped each object. Remove the clipview and then reposition the fill so it matches the intented object.
Currently all the object fills are located in the lower left of the left most object.

Opening the .pdf in Illustrator prompts the attached message. It looks the same as it is displayed in the .pdf file, however.

can't get this to work in my XPGD7 Bill
the 'missing' fills seem 'embedded' in clipped shape not resident in the clipping shape

Re: Gradients not showing up when I open a pdf file in Xara?
In earlier versions of Xtreme, misplaced fill handles was SOP in eps clipart. Most of the files I worked with seemed to have originated in Illustrator, which may or may not have had something to do with it. I learned to always zoom way out and find the handles before working with shapes with gradient fills. The fill handle translation was fixed in a version after Xtreme 3.
In XDP6 & 7, the fill handles are generally well placed, but I get a lot of redundant clipping shapes. My guess is that they're a product of the translation from source application to pdf to Xara, each of which has its own rules and format. Since I usually have to simplify vector clipart before I can work with it efficiently, I make a practice of going through the objects in the P&L and deleting any that seem to be extraneous, such as the clipping shape in Steve's illustration. And yes, the fill is in the clipped shape. In this instance, you can unclip the shapes and delete the no-color versions right down the line.
Lovely logo, BTW.

At this point, it might just be easier to recreate the image. Here's what I came up with, the font isn't exact, but that can always be replaced.

Thanks man, that's awesome!
Is there some way the ball can be separated from the leaves or are they one object now?
