Hi Ed,
It looks like you're trying to tween between 2 different text objects but without your file it's hard to say. Could you post your xar file so we can have a look at it?

If you have a named object in a frame which is not in an adjacent frame it will show as "unpaired" even if you have the same object in a later or earlier frame.

flash must have names
so make sure to name the object in frame one
copy frame
name the object with a different name
make the move/rotation/color/alpha/squash,skew/size effect
your done

Hakoo you simply added a name to the object so that in frame 2 it has two names. The tweening works because the rectangles in both frames have the zz name. If you delete the zz name in frame two the tweening will not work.
You .xar file was edited to make the two different files attached. In the singlename file I simply deleted the ccc name you had in frame 2. In the twodifferentnames file I removed the zz name in frame 2. You can see that there is no tweening in the twodifferentnames file.
