Using background eraser then creating new background color
This is the picture I am trying to edit.
Basically I want to erase the background, which the background eraser tool does wonderfully, but then I want to add a new background color. It seems like a pretty basic task but I am new to photo editing so any help would be greatly appreciated.

You must think we are psychic. ;)

Basically what the eraser is doing is making the erased portion of the image transparent. It might be easier to add a rectangle behind the image or the erased portion and apply your color to the rectangle.

Once you have removed the background, click on Layers>New Raster Layer.
This will add a new layer in the Layers Palette. Drag it under the layer of the image you have just worked on, or click on Layers>Arrange>send to bottom.
Fill this layer with the colour of your choice.
Merge All.

Ah Grenou! Sorry, I was thinking this was a Xara question. But now that I look (smack upside the head!) I see that it is not.
Never mind. :o
