The short answer is, Yes you can.
The longer answer is You certainly can, but I'm not entirely sure how to do it.
I'm running Slack, but when I did it I just used the Font Installer that comes with KDE (in the KDE control panel). This seems to be by far the easiest way to do this. I presume that Gnome also has such a beast, but I haven't used gnome in, well, ever, so I can't say with any certainty.
I run XFCE as a window manager, but I ran KDE just long enough to install fonts. The fonts settings are specific to your X server (or more specifically your X server's Font Server) and not your window manager, so that might be a quick shortcut if you don't normally use KDE but you already have it installed.
Make a symlink to your fonts in /usr/share/fonts/truetype or /usr/share/fonts/type1/
That's it. They'll all be there. It will also parse the directories, so you don't have to have a million files in the truetype directory.
This works for Ubuntu 6.06, at least (and it's with XFCE to boot).
