behzad, I think you will be on a slippery slope trying to do this.
Xara produces URLs with .htm suffixes and then with Supersites, it uses anchors to move around all the site pages. Removing just the htm part may muck up your links.
To do it, you typically would use the Rewrite command with suitable Regex strings to parse and replace the URL.
This is added into your .htaccess file.
If this sounds gobbledegook then don't even try.

Well if your home page is index.htm(l) then this does not have to be included in the web address. But I am not sure if this is what your comment is about.
Yes Gary, ran it through a site test and one of the requirements for SEO is to not show the .htm or any other file extention in the url. But I think I will leave it as is as Acorn had recommended. Not worried about little issues, just curiosity.
Absolutely.

"Make no mistake though, your website will not suffer by leaving these extensions on your URLs, so if you’re feeling uneasy about making any changes, you can relax."
thx
I found it quite ironic that the site with an article on making your url 'prettier' had this for theirs:

Remember that bit about making it easier for viewers, especially the not so technically inclined, to remember the url?
Made me smile. I'm leaving mine just as they are.
