Making Website using Xara Pro4
I am a teacher in South Africa and have a site licence for Xara Xtreme for
my pupils. I want to teach my grade 7's to create a website showing all their course work for the year using Xara Xtreme v 4.
However I am not all sure of how to make the website. Do you have an easy
tutorial I can use to aquaint myself with so I can teach them? I have contacted Gary Priester, he mentioned that there was a tutorial in the Xarazone workbook. I have tried to make a webpage following the tut. I managed to get the mouserover and mousedown to work. However I am battling to get the pages to show up (link)when clicking on the mousedown button. Is there someone who can help me with this????
My pupils will use cameras to record photos and video material as well as
text and animations made in Xara in the website. At the end of the year we will
then burn their finished product to disc for their parents.
My students are fairly well aquainted with this Xara. We are one of the
few schools in South Africa to use it

Re: Making Website using Xara Pro4
Hello Heinz,
Welcome to Talkgraphics.
The best source for Xara Xtreme tutorials is the XaraXone.
The May 2008 tutorial describes how to make a multi-page website with Pop-up and Rollover buttons. http://www.xaraxone.com/tutorials/may08/
If you have any questions regarding the tutorial or Xara Xtreme please post them here at Talkgraphics. Gary Priester (the creator of the XaraXone) is a moderator here and everyone is very willing to help answer questions.
Re: Making Website using Xara Pro4
I used Gary"s Multipage Tut as found in Xarazone workbook, but somewhere must have lost the plot. Mouseover works, but I cant link to the relevant pages when pressing Mousedown. I need to start with designing a simple 2 page web and get it work properly. this is where I need help
Re: Making Website using Xara Pro4
Heinz I must confess I have not done the Website Workbook or the Website tutorial. I have just begun reading the workbook. :o
I know there are other members that have and are using Xtreme to create webpages. Hopefully one of them will answer your question while I learn to make websites with Xtreme. :)
If not I'll answer what I can once I finish the workbook.
Re: Making Website using Xara Pro4
Heinz to add a link to a button:
1. Select a button
2. Open the Utilities Menu and Click Web Address (or use keyboard shortcut Shift+Ctrl+W).
3. In the Web Address dialog URL field:
....a. Enter ##1 for page one of your site or ##2 for the second page, etc.
....b. Enter an external website address like http://www.xaraxone.com.
4. Select where the linked page should open: same page as current page, same frame as current page, New Windows (blank page), etc.
5. Click the Add button.

Hi Heinz,
I think Bill's reply should set you in the right direction and answer your question.
To help further, I've attached a .xar file which you can look at and see how the links were set up, then export as htm to see how it works.
Good luck with your class project :)

Welcome Heinz, if memory serves me correctly it's a while since we had a participating member from South Africa.

I'd suggest the old "kiss" concept here ("keep it simple stupid").
So to start don't complicate matters with mouseOver & mouseDown effects. Just create simple text links. These should be included for Search Engine optimisation anyway.
Once you've got the pages working/linking correctly via text links then try to add some complimentary mousing effects to aid navigation. Mouse Over works fine, it indicates a link/button. Mouse Down in my opinion has very little value.
I'd suggest you start in this manner and build the site as your students grasp the more complicated methods of working.
Re: Making Website using Xara Pro4
Thank you all for your contributions. I seem to have made a blooper. When I finished making the webpage I exported it again and it was placed in a different folder. What I was looking at was my unfinished one which obviously not linked properly. This morning I found the latest edition that I made and surprise it was working. I am so chuffed.
I just need to get saving part done properly. Question - If one has to save regularly, do you have to export it everytime or can you just click the save button?
Looking forward to an answer
Regard
Heinz
Re: Making Website using Xara Pro4
It depends on how you are teaching the kids! If it was me that was teaching it I would get them to just save the Xara file after checking each pupils work at the end of a session that the work is done correctly. Then after the site is completed then get them to export as HTML and then if it is not working get them to go through the area which is not working. That way you will be able to rate the pupils progress and mark and grade accordingly.

Saving regularly (each time you make a change you wish to keep) is good practice of course, but this will only save to your .xar file.
If you want to see/test the same changes in the browser yes, you also need to export every time.
