Thought I'd start a new thread for the New Year...
Often, striving toward realism in modeling just doesn't do it for me. So I'll try something absurd...something that contradicts itself...that looks realist, but obviously cannot be.
(Bouton tries to sound like Rod Serling here): Submitted for your approval; a common brick that looks relaxed. But it can't be, now.
Can it?

Hey, you are fishing in MY ocean!!!!!
grin...
right man, this is what's needed. This is what I call brainstorming. Like good old Bernard Shaw wrote: you see things that are, and you ask why. I see things that never were, and never can be, and I say: why not?
awake! you sleepers!
terragen will be out for maccers soon (somewhere in Jan. probably). another reason to stop complaining!

Gary,

To explore "Art" (whomever he is) a little farther and further, I did this in XARA.
Who says photorealism has to be of an object that exists in the real world? All I did is define geometry (it's sort of an abstract "g") and then draw some plastic and reflective shader properties on it.
And Erik, I realize I'm fishing in your ocean, but SOMEONE has to pull old tyres and boots out of it, no?
My Best,

...now I see it can be interpreted as a "g" as well

Here's a cute duckie.
See the differnce?
This, too, was done in XARA. I realise it isn't PHOTO-realistic, but it does have dimensional, realistic qualities. And that's really what we all come here for, right?

...and here's what you can do with a photo of a stuffed duck and a model of a can of beer.
I'm pleased that many viewers don't think twice that the can is synthesized.
Perhaps this should be the duck thread?

And please post your pool duck w/ your brother. It will fit right into this thread. The pool duck is one of my all time favorites!

Hi Ross--
I have a few more besides the pool duck. That picture featured a real lifegruard, actually, Mr. Mike Plunkett. My brother, on the other hand, knows only how to sink.
This is QuackTime version 1.
My Best,
Gare
