1. Create a rectangle, this
one was 100 x 100
2. Create new layer for
objects. Make rectangle
layer not editable for now.
3. Arrange objects
overlapping rectangle.
4. Clone each object that
extends beyond the rectangle.
either add or subtract the X or Y position
of the cloned object by the number of
pixels of the rectangle.
5. Select all and apply a clip view.
Make a bitmap copy of the clipview
apply as the page background to see
if you like it.

Great solution Judi.
And beautifully illustrated.

For new users, open the Bitmap Gallery. Select the bitmap image, and press the Background button. To return to the white page background, right click off the page and select Default Page Background.

That's a technique I can use. I've tried making seamless tiles and they were not seamless.
Thanks for sharing.

Here's one of butterflies I made in a few short minutes.

Nice little tutorial Judi. It looks easy. I will have to try this. Thanks

I'm glad you all found it useful, I wasn't sure whether I should post it or not.
Gary, Thanks. Hey I didn't know about right clicking off the page to get back to the default background. Did know about holding down the CTRL key and dragging what ever color you want for the background.
Soquili, when I first was playing around with patterns/backrounds in Xara, I was slicing the extended objects and trying to eyeball the other part of the slice on the opposite side. This was mega work and often produced a fine white border.
Neat Butterflies Dale, I have a few butterfly objects hanging around maybe I'll play with them too.

Let's see what you come up with Bruce.

I used some of my brushes to create the pattern, this means that you can just change the brush stroke and voila a new pattern. I've included a standard brush so you can see that it works with any brush.
I neat technique Judi - I too had done some painful placing of images to get the correct repeat.
Sorry if the image is a bit big.

A great, logical method. Thank you.
Too bad there wasn't a scripting component in Xara then you could create a utility to automate the whole process.
