Xara Xone Video Now With Captions!
To all Xaraists who have tuned into the Xara Xone's video channel—
I am pleased to announce that Gary’s January 2012 tutorial Making a 3D Dodecahedron now has Closed Captioning (CC ) available in English.
The CC feature can be toggled on or off by clicking on the CC button on the video options dock that overlays the video player. The dock appears when you move your cursor is over the video player and will disappear when you move your cursor away from the video player.
The captioning overlay does make seeing what’s happening on the lower part of the screen a bit hard to see, but you can turn captioning on and off as many times as you like while viewing the video – so you can go back and replay a section of the video with or without the screen captioning as necessary.

Enjoy!
Re: Xara Xone Video Now With Captions!
Thanks for all of your work on this.
Re: Xara Xone Video Now With Captions!
Why thank-you Frances for your kind words.
I think it is an exciting time in XaraLand right now and I am happy to be a part of the effort to make the conversation and the exchange of information about art and artists as accessible as Xara makes creating artwork with their software tools.

Thanks for the +10 Javier.
When everyone is contributing and pulling together like they are on this forum -- offering both honest criticism and praise - it makes it easy.

Hi,
Really appreciate the closed caption...as I have a hearing loss and the closed caption really helps!!
Thanks
Jim
Re: Xara Xone Video Now With Captions!
Pleased to meet you Jim,
I'm really glad it is working for you.
Is there any way we can improve it? Line length? Phrasing?
If we are going to do this, and we are, I'd like to make it as useful as possible for everyone who wants or needs to use it.
I tried to make the captions word-for-word. That did make the lines long sometimes.
So I have a question for you and for everyone else: Is it more useful for you to have shorter caption lines overlaying the video that convey the essential meaning, but are not word-for-word. And then also have access to a word-for-word transcript in file or on another page?
Or is word-for-word in the cc better?
I was already planning on posting the word-for-word transcript along with the time code on another page that folks could open up in another tab in their browser if they wanted to follow along that way instead of having the cc obstruct the screen. Is that still a good plan?
Re: Xara Xone Video Now With Captions!
Thanks, I really like having the captions, it help inormously.
Re: Xara Xone Video Now With Captions!
Hi Grace,
I'm really glad you are enjoying using the captions. Learning new things is hard enough without having to wonder what the presenter just said.
As I mentioned a few posts ago, is there anything that could be improved that would make them even more helpful?
Cheers,
Barbara
Re: Xara Xone Video Now With Captions!
Hi Barbara
I found the white text (the french version) a little hard to read on the YouTube version. The english version on the Xone with its black band underneath the text is easier on the brain. I have no idea, of course, whether that is a configurable option.
