Where O Where is my "Print to File" Gone?
Where O Where can she be?
I hit print to file & now it's gone,
Where O Where can it be?
I tried a print to file yesterday. It took awhile for it to output but it finished. Now where does it/did it go?
Did an CMYK seperation with Print to File selected. It exported each one.
I looked in the Installed Xara folder & my working folders. Didn't see it where-ever I decided to look, Any Ideas? Does it get a special name & put in some Que somewhere? A windows thing perhaps? I'm at a loss.
Thanks Ya'll!

possible folders:
Winnt
root (c:\)
temp
tmp
winnt\temp
winnt\system32\spool
depending on the setup of your system. You might check spooled files as well.
It's kind of strange because usually the print dialog opens up a field to specify a filename for your print file before it will start writing.

When you Print to File, you get a Print to File dialog in which you designate where you want to print your file to.
Not any big mystery. Select a destination and print.
The trick is to print to file to a location where you can find the file.

Gee Thanks Garie, I don't know what I would do with out your guiding hand. Next time I will pay attention to where it goes. Your such a swell guy, Thanks again for that nugget o wealth... Don't know what I'd do without you. I LUV U MAN! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
No, Yes, actually, it must have been a Xara fluke. I was expecting to get that dialog then it started eporting each cmyk plate. I never got the chance to give it a direction or name.
Xara has been crashing on me lately, not wanting to open without a reboot. But that may be a Windows98 issue. I'll try again in the morning. I really don't recall seeing that dialog. It just started sending.
I don't think this is a user issue. Has to be a software problem. When in doubt, do as I do, Blame the software. Any software! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I'll give that print thing a look & the windows folder a gander. But if I don't know the name it exported, then I really don't think I will have much luck. I'll try a search under the actual Xara file name with a *.*.
What is the extension on a print to file?

If you check the appropriate box in the print dialogs 'separations tab', Xara will print all 4 plates to one file. The result will be 4 black and white pages.
In addition you can adjust the dot types, screen angles, dot sizes etc.
BTW - to search for the file you can run a search from start -> search for files -> sort by date -> only for data november 12, 2003. One of the files should be your nameless print file.

Hi,
Just wondered if perhaps you would like to print to a PDF file? Try: pdf995, a free PDF printer driver which works fine for me :-)
Cheers,
Sten

Thanks all for the help gentlemen. Jen http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/eek.gif, thats some good info you've posted. Should help folks that aren't familiar with printing in Xara.
I've used every option but print to file, so I'm a bit green regarding this particular aspect of Xara Printing.
I found the prn file. Now how do I open it or print it? What program do I associate it to? Lastly, How the heck do I know if it seperated properly. No way of knowing if Xara did the job right if'n I can't check it somehow. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/confused.gif
Hey Netsi/Sten, does that PDF printer file thing work from, or with Xara?

You may be able to use....
Ghostscript GSview to view your file as it can convert .prn files into PDF files. However, since Windows is non-discriminating with the default extension for "print-to-file" filenames, a .prn file could be PostScript or a version of PCL (Printer Control Language).
Ghostscript and GSview can be obtained here http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/
To print your file you might try "Free Raw Print 1.0" which is a tool for sending raw print or PRN files directly to a Windows printer, bypassing the printer driver. It can be used for reprinting captured PostScript or PCL files.
