Photo inside a shape
I'm working on a newsletter. I have a star shape which I want to appear as a a star shaped. I'm missing a step.
Draw a star --- then convert to editable shape --- then I create a bitmap copy --- then I replace the bitmap (photo) with a photo. All I get is the photo on top of the shape.
Perhaps the trick is to bring in a photo - convert to editable shape -- then draw a star ???
The process above is a little hard to describe - but it's basically a star shaped photo.
I'm completely missing something. Thanks all.

Re: Photo inside a shape
Bill, import the photo you want to fill the star shape. Delete it.
It remains in the Bitmap Gallery.
Draw your star and with it selelected open the Bitmap Gallery, select the reqired photo an select Fill from the top options within the Bitmap Gallery.
You can move the fill around as required using the Fill tool.
Your method of creating a bitmap from the star will always create a rectangular shape

Re: Photo inside a shape
My take:
Drag photo into your project
Draw your star and position over the photo
Select both photo and shape
CTRL+4
Delete the outer section
You can resize/reposition by using the usual handles within the shape.

... and then there is clipview....

Re: Photo inside a shape
@Egg's Fill approach is the simplest. You also have Fill > Bitmap and pick the image.
Both give the same outcome. You can then position, scale or change the tiling.
@Chris's is a destructive process so harder to change the number of star points.
@handrawn's Clipview is workable but it does break some other Xara functions, like Contour.
A time back, I used an SVG pattern to hold an image and then changed the fill of an SVG shape to the url for the id of the pattern.
Only of interest for Plus users and really only experimental. It is, however, very powerful.

Re: Photo inside a shape
Select the bitmap gallery was the step. Looks like there’s a couple of ways to do it too. Thanks everyone.

Re: Photo inside a shape
I had a search and found the SVG approach that i mentioned above: Attachment 134308.
It is a XAR with an SVG image in a ZIP. Unpack together. The XAR explains how to link things.
