Create 7cm circle, color it.
Clone, change to 6cm, color it.
Clone, change to 5cm, color it.
Clone, change to 4cm, color it.
Clone, change to 3cm, color it.
Clone, change to 2cm, color it.
Clone, change to 1cm, color it.
Group all.
Clone.
Move down 4cm.
Color rings in revers order except for the center.
Select upper ring group and clone.
Create 7cm square and align with latest clone, color it black.
Create 3.5cm square and align to bottom right of bigger square, color it white.
Group squares.
Select square group and latest ring group and apply opacity mask.
siran, 100%. I never even thought of the opacity mask.
I just used a semi-circle as a cutter to get the same as your overlay approach.

If you repeat for the other grouped circles, you can extend the shapes as a frieze or pattern.
I am not sure if the same method could achieve Gary's four-leafed clover.
