I have a Dell 24" diagonal monitor. USB plugs on the side and photo card slots. Picture is good enough and tilt and swivel is nice. Pretty good when you want a split screen. Even a 30" would be better, but I think the cost would be substantial. I plan to stick with what I have enough it dies, at that time I will seriously consider two monitors.
I have used extreme for around 3yrs for web design and creating images just for fun.
One monitor is fine for me
I sometimes sit my laptop next to me if i want to look around for inspiration while working on a project.
PS. watch out when using older screens as the colours fade. If you are going to publish your work make sure you check the colours with what you expected.
I used to use two, but now with a 26" monitor I just use one.
I use one. It's an HP 25.5" wide screen with built in web camera (and all the added slots). Was expensive but worth it as I can easily have two different browsers open at the same time while I do my web designing. I also like it for using Xara and having a tutorial open at the same time, side by side! Works for me.
I use one 22" inch for my desktop work, as well we are hooked up to a 40" hdtv for music related stuff... and for video previewing, viewing etc.
I only have one but I would love to have 2 monitors hooked up.

I've got a 22" main with 19" for palettes. When I replace the 19" I think it will be with a 25".
At this point I can't imagine working regularly with only one monitor. When I have to do actual work on my laptop it feels claustrophobic!

A 47 inch Desktop - don't think I would ever get any work done with a single monitor set-up
