I don't care much about these sites and as far as I know (which is little) they're pretty useless.

Hmmm not always true people. My lost daughter found me after eight years through a trail I had left on FRU. So it worked for me...

But am in the minority of having a real reason.

I "use" Facebook, but not regularly - it is quite useless but on the other hand it quite good to get in contact with old "lost" friends. I have a gmail mail account (who doesn't?) which I check now and then, and there I usually see who has tried to contact me at Facebook, and if someone interesting (like an old friend) has sent me a message on Facebook. And if that is the case then I log in on Facebook.
