I love Xara movies. They help me get up to speed on how to do cool things with Xara.

I am curious. What tools were used to create these movies ?? What is used to record the screen : the mouse movement, the click, the key strokes, the narration, etc ...

    Xorro,

The product is called "Camtasia Studio" from a company called TechSmith.

The voice-overs are added afterwards. I think it's done with VirtualDub.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong... Antony?!!??!

Yes indeed. Camtasia was used to record the video.

I didn't actually produce any of the latest ones. I don't think Virtualdub was used. I think Camtasia was used for that too.

Camtasia has the recorder element, and the 'studio' production element.
I'd start a revolution, if I could get up in the morning.

Camtasia recorder used to record the video - this uses the TSCC lossless codec that can record screen action. This codec is used for most X1 videos and is why the Camtasia player is used. The download version of the long Photo movie is re-encoded as MP4 video and MP3 audio. VirtualDub and Audacity are used to edit the video and audio.

There are three products that I know of that can do this (we use two of them at our University).

    Camtasia Studio
    Robodemo (now owned by Macromedia)
    Qarbon (qarbon.com)

All three will create FLASH movies of your screen-work.

And whose voices do we hear on the voice over narration?

Various voices. Some employees, some professional 'voice artists', if that's what you call them. I know it's a bit disconcerting having different voices, and I'd like to move towards a common voice over time. Do people think the voice used in the latest ones (e.g. the long Photo Composition one from the website and the 'complex fills' one in the Help->Movies) is an OK voice?

I prefer a female voice over a male voice, yes!

Easy on the ears. There is one exception, the Earthlink gal that does all the voice work on there tutorials and installation is quite annoying!! Blech!!

But the woman that did the voice work on this last Xara movie was quite pleasant. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
