    Default question about expander.xar

I'm trying to follow the directions for this application to save a read error file, but I can't seem to figure out how to open the expander.xar file and keep it open.

This is probably a simple programmer thing, but being an artist.. I have no idea how to work it - lol.

When I open it the black box flashes open for a sec then disappears.

    Please help..

ExpandXAR is a DOS command line utility an not a Windows GUI program.
It must be run from a DOS box.
Go to START -> RUN, then type CMD and press enter.
The syntax for using ExpandXAR is:

    \expandxar inputfilename.xar outputfilename.xar

Member Stan Day created a Windows front-end UI for ExpandXAR which I attach here.
Please thank Stan if you find this useful

    EDIT: Download Expandxar here

    Hi Jen,

The ExpandXar.exe is a command line tool (a DOS application). You will need to open a command line window to use the application.

If you are running Windows XP click the start button.
In the start menu click on Run.
In the dialog that opens type cmd then hit the Enter key.
    A command window will open.

You will need to have expandxar.exe in your command path or in the same folder (directory) where the file you want to try to correct.

Change directory to where you have a copy of the file you want fixed.
At the command prompt type expandxar.exe errorfilename.xar newfilename.xar and hit the enter key.

If you have expandxar.exe in your path or in the folder where you file is located you should see some text from expandxar as it is working then the command prompt will return once expandxar if finished.

EDIT: I see Sledger has already answered your question. Getting slow in my old age
I like using the command line directly within a command window (old time DOS user here )

I'm not getting it to work.

It keeps giving me an error of "expand.xar is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".

I have it in the same folder as my bad file. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

You seem to be putting a '.' between expandxar making it expand.xar - this is incorrect
    'expandxar' is one unbroken word.

    expandxar inputfilename.xar outputfilename.xar

I caught that mistake and went back to try it the correct way... No luck. It gave me the same message.

I wonder if I have the file thing done wrong. How is it supposed to recognize the correct file with the corrupt file and the expandxar.exe functions?

You may not have expandxar.exe in the same folder from where you are running the command.
Try copying expandxar.exe to C:\windows - this should make it an available command from any folder.

So the expandxar process completed, but the repaired file give this error when you try to open it in Xtreme?
Or the Expandxar process gives the 'PrepareImport failed' error?

If memory serves that message indicates expandxar could not find the input file.
