And people complaining about file sizes? With Gigs for pence (UK) who cares!
I do. Smaller, more efficient files process faster and eat less resources. Most of my output is used in other applications, which I usually have open at the same time I'm working in Xara. Even on a fast machine with decent RAM, things get tight. In addition, larger files mean bigger backup requirements. For those of us who're tracking thousands of files, it's an issue.

Perhaps one solution to the undo v file size problem is to have a linked file, perhaps xml, that the user could edit too.

And of course this should be optional.

A bonus with this would be you could apply the file to another image - to replicate some style for example.

Or you could just put everything into version control using something like Subversion, which is what I do.

It's actually easier than it sounds, and allows you to go back to any previous snapshot of a file much more easily than the whole annoying name-rename dance.

    hi Hillsy,

Never heard of Subversion, can you give us a little more info on it besides it makes backups.

Subversion is a version control system designed for use on development projects, but also with quite a bit of applicability for documents, drawings etc. Basically it implements a versioned repository where you can always roll back to an earlier version of a file, undo deletions etc.

By itself it's not that user friendly. It's a programmers' tool after all http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif But you can either get a Windows Explorer client (TortoiseSVN)or if you're feeling really tricky even map it as a fully-versioned network drive using a combination of NetDrive, WebDAV and Apache.

    Lots of info here: http://subversion.tigris.org/

sounds like a neat program... for the programmer types. I think I will check it out. Is the price resonable, it sounds like one of those per seat license type programs that most humans can only dream of. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

sounds like you need a spare 'puter running Linux/apache server just to run it... Nice for a programming house, do not think I would get away with it in my house. The wife would throw a fit... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

But it is another excuse to learn Linux for work. Trying to convince the Boss, I need to set up a box to learn Linux/subversion. Might be a little hard. Most people there have trouble with windoze... and have no idea Linux exists...

Actually, we run Subversion+Apache just fine on Windows at work http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I do not know iof I would want to run a file server on my machine... Not with windoze as an OS. Too many broken panes in that house of glass... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
