I've been given a project to accomplish: Create a character with less than 5000 polys, texture, bone, rig, and animate a walk cycle, using NO Max plugins(no Character Studio, no HumanIK, no CAT ) . Here is the initial sketch, used for reference.

I've been bouncing back and forth from Max5 and Wings3D for the modeling, and it's been a lot of fun as well as a good learning experience. Here's a screencap of the finished model in Wings. The rest will have to be done in Max.

Since I'm supposed to make everything one single mesh, texturing was going to be a little challenging. This multi-colored render was the result of UVW unwrapping and modifying to eliminate stretching when Photoshopping the textures. LOTS of time fixing this stuff...

...and here he is with textures, pretty much finished, but not completely. No lighting yet. Got bones and rigging to finish...

Yep, our final project for MaxII class! Using Wings3D was allowed, since it is free and available to everyone There are some things that are easier to accomplish in Wings than ANYTHING else, and it plays nicely with just about every other 3D package on the market.

Here he is, all boned and rigged, for anyone that wants to see it. Now I understand why Character Studio and Motionbuilder exist What a LOT of work!

    Next is skinning.....
