Instead of making myself nuts trying to sculpt a beach and an ocean using metaballs or something, I used John Knoll's CyberMesh plug-in for Photoshop, and painted the relief in an image file and then it converted the greyscale info to bumps and waves in 3Ds format.

The sky is from Aurora plug-in for Photoshop, and the beach ball was simply done in trueSpace (hardly the visual highlight of the scene )

The bumps and starfish texture were done in Painter 6 and then applied to the model. Fractal textures are a life-saver!

    My Best,

    Gare

    Nice Gary

Who makes Aurora and does it do a really good job of sky?

I dunno, I think the Beachball is very visually atractive

Nice job on the starfish, and the beach looks pretty good maybe a little repetative (sp?)

It also reminds me it it getting time for a trip to the coast. (about 2 hours from me)

Aurora is made by Digital Element for Mac and Win:

$129 and worth it IMO if you want to be a "purist" and make every pixel synthetic in a composition. This is what I was trying to do in the beach ball scene...absolutely no digital photoelements.

Randy, you are right about the beach...I'll try in a future WIP to make the modeled surface more irregular, as well as the texture map and bump maps I put on it. I'm also unhappy about where the sand meets the ball. There should be some loose grains stuck to the ball and a softer edge where ball meets beach, huh?

Add some fine grain noise into your sand shaders bump Gare, also a little turbulence of some kind in the diffuse channel

The height of the sea needs to come down a bit as well as the whole image is tilted upwards.

    Stu,

Damn your hide (and I mean that with all due affection! ); you're the only one to notice that I "cheated" the water!

Okay, let me see how I can get a better view. Here's the setup...

This is actually more painting than modeling (and probably looks it!) but it might just be cleaner than my original post.
