    As an alternative method:
    Cntrl-C (Copy) the object with the bitmap fill.
    Streach you shape to whatever new shape you require.
    Cntrl-Shift-A (Paste attributes)
    Your reshaped object will then revert back to the original fill.

    Okay I guess I didn't realize you were resizing the shape with the shape editor tool. Selecting a node turns it red.
