Earthlink.net offers a free service to its subscribers called Spaminator which filters out SPAM (well most of it anyway). You can review the deleted message headers and decide if you really wanted to know how to increase your sexual vitality, get filthy rich without leaving home, see Trixy's new web cam, and other junk.

I noticed a lot of messages with Re: for the subject headers marked for deletion the last time I checked. This morning my list of virus infected messages dropped from about 40 yesterday to one or two.

ED, thanks for the latest link, which I've followed up and passed on to the unfortunate 'sender' of my infected email.

(Sure it had 'Re:' in the subject line, but also some further text making it look a genuine reply to something I'd sent. It was 'from' a colleague and friend, who realised instantly that he'd been hit but was powerless to stop it, and I've had a graphic description at work today of what actually happened when he opened his mail!)

    Beware...

I've been using Spamkiller by NovaSoft for almost a year now. http://www.spamkiller.com/ Let's me preview messages like POP3 Scanner does, if I want too in addition to all of it's filtering tools for junk mail. (Believe me, you can filter based on anything you can think of!) In all of the versions I got yesterday & the day before, Spamkiller thought they were audio clips!

One of the things I noticed when I was in our local city offices a few years back was the lack of warnings about file attachments. (City had just put in Internet capablity on all workstations.) All I could think of was how much of my tax dollars would be wasted if one of those workers opened something they shouldn't.

Went right home & wrote up an 'Avoiding Virus Infections' guidelines which I faxed to every city, county, and state office for which I had a number. The version on the user group's site has been updated at least twice a year since. Had a PDF version of it there for sometime, but no one was downloading it so I didn't keep doing that. Keep telling everyone that this would make a wonderful gift for that family or friend who's just purchased a computer for the first time!

After I had reinstalled after my Wacom Hell problem, I, of course, re-installed the Norton Virus and Utilities and it wanted to do an update right off the bat, something told me to do it and then it wanted to protect my E-Mail, I said a definet YES to that one.

Low and Behold, this morning I got one, and Norton kicked in and told me what was up and asked me what to do with it, I said DELETE IT!!! You bet!!

Doing an update now, guess I better set the program to update every couple of days. A friend of mine "in the buisness" told me that all the accounts he is in charge of needs that "almost daily" updating of the DAT files in order for maximum security of viral protection.

From reading this post and all the threads I am going to do that same.

    I don't feel very popular. I haven't receive a single virus in my e-mail!!

Oh well, I suppose that's a good thing. I've NEVER had a virus (or at least been aware of it) in the whole 7 years I've had a PC!

And I've always had an up-to-date virus scanner installed.

    Hi everyone

I've got another of these blasted viruses today nothing like as many as Gary mind you - I've only had four (or is it five) since Sunday 25th. Anyway, what should I do about informing the individual about it. Knowing me I'd want to offer any advice I can about getting up-to-date virus defs and then sanning their PC etc..etc..etc. What would you do?

I should add that the email has been sent to an address that usually receives enquiries about off-road motorcycling - I don't know that I've ever received any junk on that email address. I suppose there's always a first time though for everything.

As well as using the address book, these latest viruses seem to send to email addresses in web pages. I believe they find them in people's Temp. Internet folders.

I have two addresses on the web that are only used for people I don't know to contact me. Usually they are full of spam, but I've been getting a regular flow of viruses through them lately. I used to politely reply telling them they had the virus and giving a link to a free fix.

Not one person thanked me, some were rude, but most didn't reply! Now I leave 'em to fend for themselves.
