    Hey fellas...

Been working on something and using Xara for some page layout design (which has to be it's least capable ability) and needed to wrap some text around an inset image. For some reason I thought there was a way to do it but I failed to recall it and ended up just manually setting the text.

So, am I old and forgetful or old and delusional?

Hi Joe... good to see you again. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I don't think XaraX can do that. I believe i myself wanted that function a long time ago and Gary or someone told me it wasn't possible.

At least i HOPE i'm remembering right... i'm "gettin old" too. http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

    Hey Joe

Can you post a rough drawing or sketch of what you are trying to do?

Also, have you looked through the TIPs section on the Xara Xone?

With all the things people can and have done with text I suppose my question could be interpreted several different ways.

I threw together a really quick example from some of the elements of a current project of mine to give you an idea of what I wanted to do with the block of text. (please note this is not my layout... simply elements I threw together to explain)

Hopefully that gets my question across better than my writing.

You want the bottom of the type to conform to the wavy path?

If yes, create invididual characters instead of complete words, and use the Default Envelope to shape the bottom of the character.

That what you had in mind?

hmmm, still not explaining myself well. No, I just mean the text box (with the marketing copy) In most layout programs you can manipulate the text box to make text naturally wrap around objects. In the picture I provided I had to add spaces at the beginning and hard returns at the end of lines to make sure that the text would skirt both the logo and the light bulb icon. If I change that text I would have to again force the text into the shape I wanted instead of it just replacing within the area I wanted filled with text.

    Make sense?

Oh, and I assume you are talking about the text in the logo.... no, that's a finished item.

    (Read the words Gary!)

Sorry, I see what you mean. Wrapping text or run-around text.

Xara cannot automatically do that so you need to do this manually. CorelDRAW can wrap text ten ways to Sunday and does a pretty fair job of it. What I do in CorelDRAW is create my own clipping path, send the image to the back, and wrap my text around the clipping path, adjusting the clipping path as necessary to get the best fit.

In Xara you can use the paragraph text mode (click the text tool on the page and drag to the width of your column) then manually indent the type using either the space bar and/or the Kerning adjustment on the Infobar. (Insert the cursor at the start of the line and increase the kerning space as needed. Words that extend beyond the end of the measure will drop down to the next line. It is not automated but it works pretty well.
