I did not spend a lot of time on the fine details of the birds in the scene, because i knew in advance that the finished render would only be part of a finished piece.

I used Microsoft Impressionist to paint over the birds, added an Aurora sky and did a little tweaking in XARA afterwards.

Sometimes, the finished piece can be envisioned as something other than a rote render of a scene. I compared the render to the painted peice, and I'm happier with the painting here. I did the primitives in Carrera using metaballs.

I like the composition Gary! The "splotch" (for lack of a better term!) of sky back there really fits the style well. The eyes also have a distinct appeal to them (looks as though they were hand-crafted).

I'm kinda curious, though, are the black bars along the birds tails a part of their coloring, or a shadow?

I like it Gary! The birds sorta remind me of those wooden ones that my Grandmother would stick in her potted plants around the house.

Very cool Gary,I really like that kind of style

Reminds me just a smidegeon of a short film on the Ardman movie,Chicken Run anyway there are a heap of little birds sitting on a wire and they are quite uppity little gits, and its hard to explain the rest but its quite funny and the birds slightly remind me of that short film....anyone else see it?

PIXAR films, "For the Birds", directed by Ralph Eggleston.

Actually, when I did the piece, I was thinking of the ViewSonic spokesbirds.

This model simply did not cut it as a model, so I painted over it to make the "sense" of the scene more plausible and visually accepted.

The flame was modeled and rendered using a flame shape with a transparency mask on the material. BTW, this is also a short animation, if anyone would like to see it.

Goudian Finches (Might have spelled the name wrong), are what the Viewsonic Birds are. These little birds are small but expensive to own. Very colorful though!

Gary Love the candle! I always enjoy seeing anims, so post the link and let us get at it

Here's a link to my candle animation, zipped. Unfortunately, catalog.com does not recognize streaming media, so I can't set it up to just play for you. BTW, I moved the lights around in the scene to get that uneven illumination effect.
