Hopefully Ivan and some others will dig this thread.

I used XARA when it first came out as a "Band-Aid" for trueSpace and Photoshop pieces that weren't quite right. After all this time, the three apps have become blurred in their outlines.

I'm opening this thread because I think "3D" is in the eye of the beholder. The tubes were drawn in XARA, and not modeled.

Does anyone else have peices that aren't strictly a product of rendering meshes with skin on 'em?

    Gary,

I don't have any pieces in 2d that looks like 3d. I simply have not been able to develop the talent to shade and light my 2d drawings in a realistic way.
That is why I found 3d so interesting. I could create something semi-realistic. I am not one that thinks art must be realistic looking to be art. But my taste/admiration goes toward artist who can create such pieces.
The stuff that Steve Newport (hope I got the name right) does in Xara blows me away. Some of it looks better than I can create will a 3d app.

2d, 3d or whatever it is the final art that I love not how it is made. I admire the talent of 2d, 3d, tradtional and digital artist. But I must admit I admire a 2d artist that can create works that look 3d the most.

    Good job!

    Hi Randy--

Yup, Steve Newport has got his eye(s) trained so well it is indeed difficult sometimes to tell his work from a "real" mesh model.

Drawing in 2D to achieve a 3D effect is not simple, however; that has not been my experience, at least. This piece took me a good two days using XARA.

    Any other people?

    My Best,
    Gare

lots of stuff that could fit this thread!

The one I attach was drawn in Xara X and it was a study trying to work with both 2d and 3d elements in the same drawing. I was trying to get each kind of element to inform the dimensionality of the other.

    Regards, Ross

    Hi Gary,

You are very adept in many apps.

I have a few pics made in Xara that may fall into this catagory.

Another attempt at 3D using 2D Xara.

Neat idea Gary, and I must confess I really don't have too many 2D worx which would fall into this category... this leaves me scratching my head in what I should create for this thread... I will have to get back to you on this one...

great worx each of you... the orange has made me hungry/thirsty... the cup is now full of coffee and sitting on my desk, what a very nice candle there S, and those poweroutlet face plates are simply divine there Gary... [thumbs up all of you]

that's a lot of times my goal in creating pieces in Xara. But most of the stuff I've learned has come from reading or interacting in a digital 3D world. You definitely shouldn't limit yourself, or at least your knowledge, to one type of media or application. Every bit of info and experience will help you in the long run.

    Hey nice stuff everybody!

    Great thread too Gare, thanks.

I too have tons of stuff that fits this topic. I don't usually have much of a problem creating a 3D illusion using a 2D app. In fact, i 'seem' to have an aptitude for it. Don't really know why.

I'm posting just 2 here, but i have a lot more in my gallery. So if anyone's interested further, i suggest you head over there. The images would eat up too much space here.

This first one is an interface design, done using Xara 2; back in 2000. This is a low-res copy.
