I am having trouble creating a blurred text effect. I think this should be quite easy but I just don't seem to be able to get my head around it. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanking you in advance,

I can think of 2 quick ways to blur text.

First, tou could make a bitmap copy of the text and aplly bitmap effects, blur a couple of times. this has the drawback of blurring the surrounding "white" area of the text.

In the following example, I made 3 copies of the text, feathered each, offset them differently and applied a fractal plasma transparency to each. A bit more complicated, but you keep the surrounding area cleaner and can edit each copy as much as needed.

    hope it helps...

    You can also:

    Type your text.
Give your text a glow shadow.
Select you text with the arrow tool.
Feather your text 'till it becomes invisible.

Advantage: you can still tweak with the shadowtool and with the text tool.

By letting the text stay a liitle visible, and playing with the text and the shadow colour, you can obtain very inspiting results too.

Great tip Erik. Great how it stays very editable. Of course you can have the 'shadow' tool be whatever colour you want.

Another way - Do as Erik suggests but forget the feathering. After applying the shadow select the text and simply give it no colour. It remains editable in the same way. It avoids the feathering aspect - which is known to slow down some computers if there's a lot of it.

    SL-Blur

This free utility is in the XaraXone Shareware Page. Here's how it works:

    1) Convert your text to bitmap.

    2) Copy the bitmap to the clipboard.

    3) Open SL-Blur and paste your image.

    4) Select a degree of blur with the slider.

    5) Press the teardrop icon to apply the blur.

    6) Copy the bitmap to the clipboard.

    7) Paste it back into Xara (select the As Bitmap Image option when prompted).

    OR

    1) Select your text, add a wall shadow in Xara.

    2) Adjust the sliders until the shadow is blurred the way you desire.

    3) Convert the text and shadow to editable shapes (Arrange menu).

    4) Ungroup and delete the un-blurred text.
