    Greetings All,
Since I don't believe in having "business/work" computers connected to the internet, I am wondering how to install X1.

The exe returns to Xara for some additional files. I suppose this is some sort of copy protection device.

    Any ideas ??
    Regards,
    tad

    Hey Tad

I believe Xara is trying to connect to the mother ship to see if there are any new movies or updates available.

As far as I know it is all very benign.

Most software companies are doing this these days because it is easier to notify a user when they are on-line than to try to send an e-mail message which may well be dumped as SPAM.

It really requires access to the web? Never noticed... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif That would definately rule out Xara X1 for all institutions with really tight proxy servers - Elementary schools for starters. Tad is not THAT big of an anomaly... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/wink.gif I know of quite a few companies that keep important machines away not only from web access, but all kind of networks as well.

When I upgrade, this machine is going off-line as well, as a back-up.

Granted, most users of X1 will probably have access, but I do find it odd that you would limit yourself when you need all the customers you can get.

Hey, Microsoft bought up Expression, hopefully that won't happen with Xara X... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif If E3 had this activation process, I'm pretty sure a lot of people would be sweating buckets right now.

    Anyway... http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

I don't believe that X1 checks for online updatess until it has been successfully installed.

The download version however (I am assuming the CD version comes with these already) will attempt to download a couple of files that are needed for the application's operation, if they aren't already installed. I guess that some versions of windows already have these files. They're about 3.5MB in total, so it's understandable that they were left out of the download if some users have them already.

I don't think there should be any problems running X1 without 'net access once it's installed.

So I guess the thing to do is to get hold of the files it's looking for, and install them manually in advance. Unfortunately I don't remember offhand what they were, but I'm sure I saw them mentioned in an earlier thread. Maybe it was the big thread about X1 at the top of the forum? I know that one was related to XML.

I have seen computers that where totally shielded from any outside monitoring/connection. It was a real pain to upgrade anything on these...

For me, it would be impossible not to have network connection for my computers.

This is VERY important to me, because, as it is now, I can't print.

We've now updated the Xara X1 trial so it will allow you to download and install GDI+ and XML4 separately if the installer can't access the internet. There are also a few other fixes included in the latest version (dated 1-Jun-04). You can download it from www.xara.com/downloads/xarax/ and you can find more information on installing GDI+ and XML4 at http://xara.com/support/xarax/extras/.

You do not need to be connected to the internet to run Xara X1.

    Regards, Neil

    QUESTION FOR NEIL H:

    Hi Neil,

    So I read this posting.

    I open XaraX1.

I perform HELP > ABOUT; it says I'm running version dtd, 12 May 2004.

Next I do HELP > UPDATE; it says I have the most current version installed.

? Shouldn't the update checking notice that I do not have the 01 Jun 2004 installed and then ask if I want to do an update?

I guess the update checking and installation process is not clear to me.
