    But, there is a way to get around this.

    If you have access to a photo editing application such as Photoshop, make a duplicate of your image. In this duplicate make the background white and everything else black. Save this image with a different name.

    Import both images into Xara.

    In the Bitmap Gallery (see screen image below) locate the black and white image and press the button Transp.

    Now everything that was white in the color image will now be transparent.

    This help?

    use a pixel editor and mask your object (image) area you want to show, save it as png. Import into Xara and you have a perfect alpha channel bitmap with transparency.

    I have just tried this and Xara X does seem to support Tiff import with alpha channel directly - just use File|import and select a Tiff file with alpha channel. I also tried support of same with LZW compression and that works too.

    Actually, I also checked out the Help file under "supported formats" and support for TIFF with alpha channel is listed there.

    Never mind!

    Hmmm? I never knew that Brian. But I have to confess to never having worked with a TIFF file with Alpha Channel.

    So this was one even the learned Mr. Benthien did not know :-) So I don't feel so bad.

    I didn't know the TIFF/alpha factoid, either, Gary, so you may feel even less bad. :-)

    I've never bothered with transparent TIFFs, as I've grown VERY fond of the 32-bit PNG: they're compressed but lossless and has splendid 8-bit transparency. I exchange a lot of stuff between Photoshop 7 and XaraX that way. Yeah, I got PS7 - it's excellent, though it really should have been called 6.5! But it's faster and slicker than 6, and certainly worth it for Real Pros. Hear that, Jens? ;-)

    Gary,

    you are right - I didn't discover this feature. So what do all of us learn from this? None of us had the time to exploit Xara X to the fullest extent, so there is no need for a next version. Only after we've discovered ALL features - obvious and hidden - it's time for a major step ;-}

    That's one of the things I love about Xara - there is no annual 'rental fee' just to participate in the rat race of the biggies.

    Let us all dig deeper to disclose more hidden features of X - I wonder what the results will be ;-}
