Effect Painter tool in Xara Designer Pro V12

Could you please advise with some inspiration, where or to which targets it could be used the new Effect Painter tool?



I mean if I need an area to be masked and handled differently with adding some effect, then so far used to outline the object or now would use the Magnetic Lasso tool and would have the result.

In my opinion 'painting' a mask is not enough precise or not as much like the Magnetic Lasso. But probably just being not enough open for the new way, that is why asking for inspiration

a suggestion:

use magnetic lasso to outline the area of the photo you want to change
with both mask active and photo selected use ctrl+4 to slice the photo and the paint the effect on the slice that was defined by the magnetic lasso
then select both slices and make bitmap copy [at the appropriate resolution]
if necessary replace the two slices with the bitmap copy using 'paste replacing selection'

The Magnetic Lasso does not work to select an area to edit. It would be great and I have made that suggestion to Xara.

YES, thank you for suggesting it. The first thing I did was try to make some airbrush-touch up masks for the fx painter tool then got sad immediately afterwards. lol

meanwhile I think you could use the method I gave for a shape as well as a photo just as long as it did not have an outline or was grouped, which would not then work

I couldn't get it to work with copy, but I got this to work with cut...when I copy and paste in place, it doesn't make a copy, the effect brush still bleeds outside the selection.

To me it works.

-Import picture

-select area with lasso

-ctrl+c (sometimes rightmousebutton drag or ctrl+k(clone) also works)

- ctrl+v or ctrl+shift+v

-double click area(the copy)

-switch over to effect painter and choose your flavour

Oh neat trick is this

The lasso selects to little of the desired area,since we cannot adjust the lasso afterwards :-(
Use the contour tool or the shape tool after the copy/cloning

I think what csehz is really after is more of an idea of the possible uses of the effect painter. It can be used for quick touch ups such as whitening teeth, brightening eyes, dodging and burning. For example you can bring out more depth by using the burning and doging effects Doging is a lightening effect and can brighten areas of your photo and burning will darken areas of the photo.

here is a quick example the difference is subtle but you can see on the after photo that some soft burning and a warming effect with a bit of transparency set give more depth to the photo. I hit the areas where the light seemed to be naturaly hitting with just a quick soft brush of warming.
