I have been getting an internal error every time I apply the shadow effect to page elements: Internal Program Error 1994.k.no.nt

Have you tried restarting and running as administrator?

To elaborate. Right click on the program icon (needs to be on the Desktop or in the programs folder) and select Run as Administrator. This is the first fix to try when things get weird. It will either work or it will not and you only need to do this one time.
