    As I mentioned earlier, I used to play with Lightwave3D and I still have a soft spot for it, though it's fallen out of fashion a bit.

    They sent me their newsletter this morning. You might get some inspiration!

    Wings3D is freeware and is used by many pros as a quick way to create models they can import into the hi-end programs. The easiest rendering package for low money is Vue d'Esprit. Good luck. It takes many many hours to become fast and proficient with the tools. This is why folks specialize, as modeling is a different discipline than skinning, etc.
