Default Change ruler and Grid to imperial from metric

    Hi,

I am trying to change my rulers and grid to imperial measure
I have scoured the forum but have drawn a blank.

I have found (Utilities/Options/Units) and changed these to inches, fine but this has not changed the ruler or grid.
Looking in the grid and ruler tab I only find 1cm in the box but no option to change this.
Has anyone any idea how to set imperial as the default for both the the ruler and grid.
    Thanks
    John

    John, Display the Ruler (Ctrl+L).
Right-click on the origin or along the scales and pick Grid and Ruler options... ; change Major spacing to 1in.
Toolbar; Utilities > Options > Grid and Ruler.

    Perfecto,

    Worked like a dream.

An old friend is having problems with a competitors software his only issue with purchasing Xara being could it work in imperial.
I think this will be sufficient to convert him.
Thanks for your prompt reply Acorn.

John, remember to create a blank document with all the required settings and save that off as a template so it will be £.s.d, each time it is used.

That's really strange! I am in Australia which is a metric country, yet any new document I start is Imperial. There must be settings somewhere that universally set Metric or Imperial. Maybe Xara is sensitive to the country settings in Windows, but I've definitely got everything set up correctly there. This needs deeper investigation...

Although when I start a new document, mine always opens as Imperial, on older versions, I just select US Letter size and it defaults to inches, then I set to custom and set to the document size I want which varies (18 x 24, 24 x 36, or some other custom size).

Yes, you're right. If I start with a template such as A4 portrait everything is set up in metric units. I'll have to change my ways. I usually just hit the New Document button which (I guess) defaults to US Letter. There's still a strangeness though - if I change the Page Size from US Letter to A4, everything still stays in imperial, yet A4 is a metric paper size afaik. What Acorn said is 100% correct - make your own templates the way you want them.

Save your modified Template as the default, new documents open with the default template. Named templates open with the attributes you assigned to them when saved.

Brilliant! Thanks for that hint. You can tell I haven't been using templates.

I have different templates set in metric units, Pixels (for web graphics) and imperial or US measurements. And templates can hold so much more, like text styles and named colours for example
