Anyone suggest a good way of gaining access to psd files without having to buy PS?

The later versions of Xara Designer Pro X can edit PSD files to some extent including layers.
Or you can probably purchase an older version of Photoshop on line which would not be as expensive.

Here's a link to a legitimate free download of Photoshop CS2 with a serial number.
Bob.
Moderators update :The official explanation from Adobe is that, in December 2012, it shut down the servers that handled product activation requests for CS2. Following complaints from existing customers who needed to reinstall their paid-for copies of CS2 but were unable to activate them, Adobe then released the downloads and serial numbers. In a subsequent posting on its forum, it clarified the issue, and stated categorically that the software was only for those who already owned CS2 licenses and certainly wasn't to be regarded as freeware.

** Detailed "Create A Spinning Logo Tutorial" is available in .pdf format for download at this link **
Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read. Groucho Marx.
Technically, that download is only for people with CS2 or before of photoshop.
I mostly use Photoline as my bitmap editor. Depending on the PSD it does very well. Certain layer styles, smart objects, spot colors and the like are flattened or converted to the document color space. Text remains text and most things in PS come in wonderfully though. Mac and PC versions. Constantly updated both through a dot release and at major releases.

Mike is right, to get the Adobe download, you have to have an account with Adobe. Once downloaded you don't need a Ser. No. as in this download so it is an illegal copy. Really the link given here by #iamtheblues should be removed.
Design is thinking made visual.
FWIW, GiMP editor for Win, Unix, and the Mac can open a PSD file with layers.
And FWIW, Adobe has known about this flap for quite a while, and they perhaps even caused it to get publicity. Bob's link should go down with an explanation to follow, but no one should cry for Adobe or Argentina.
