When I feel like drawing something but don't know what -- I usually turn to playing around with text. I find it can be good clean fun without being too demanding on the brain. Try it - Pick a word or string of text (anything really) and just play around with it.

I like it Ross. I am currently doing just that,, except it is for a logo design project. I'll post the URL when I post the samples for the client's review.

.... normally I turn to the brush tool, which I seldom find a "real" use for in drawing, but it gives me hours of useless pleasure. Xara3D also gives me a similar time wasting experience. I normally deplore animated graphics on web sites, but love making them. Maybe I should take your lead Ross and try spending my time more productively with text. The way the "COM" is almost like a letter being posted thru a letter box is very inventive.

playing around with Xara is rarely a waste of time. Just trying things adds to your skill set and helps make you more productive when you have something you need to achieve. Often in my 'playing' I'm not breaking any new ground for myself but still I can see how helpful it is in keeping the program intuitive.

I rarely play with brushes. I do play with filter effects on bitmap copies quite often. -- That's how the grainy texture on the above graphic was created. I also like to play with 2d/3d relationships. The example above falls into that category.
