What are you trying to do?

You can select individual objects. And you can apply a mask for photo editing. So it depends on which Xara product and what you want to use the layer mask for.

I need it for make rollable eyes in Crazy Talk Animator . CTA is a 2D Animation Tool, or rather, a tool to make 2D Sprites character to animate it with 3D Motions, like motion capture.

CTA hasn't drawing tools, like toonboom or Anime Studio, so the content must be imported from a GafikTool.

With Flash and Draw Plus it is easy peasy but, I want achieve it to do in xara, because it would very nice to make a CTA Character Template for xara User.

Here are the Guides for the both another applications.

    Draw Plus

    Flash

Perhaps you can give an example as to why the mask is useful?

For the examples that I've seen, the shapes can be easily drawn and I can't see why a mask helps.

I understand completely the use of a mask layer - I've used that for years in Flash - but I wouldn't use it for anything that you've shown.

    I must be missing something.

Would it help if you could create the SWF rolling eyes in Xara?

OK, so basically Reallusion is inspecting the swf and is able to manipulate the named MovieClips inside the swf.

Unfortunately, Xara doesn't have an equivalent mask layer, so you can't have the pupil being dragged around and clipped by another MovieClip.

I don't have access to Xara right now - I'm not even sure you can create named MovieClips that Reallusion could manipulate.
