some programs 'sandbox' their codecs so that they do not interact with other programs - this is generally done for security/stability [however effective that may be]

you can download and install/uninstall codec packs in the same way you would a program - if you do make sure you download them from a reputable source; codecs spiked with malware are not uncommon

What program am I using to create my avi's?
Not sure what you mean but I am creating my animation in Photo & Graphic Desingner 10. After creating the animation I click on 'file' then I go down to 'export animation'
and click on that. This brings up a window where I select a folder for my animation to go to. At the bottom of the window is a place called 'save as type' and I can select
either gif, swf or avi. I select avi. Below that is the 'options' button. I click on that and it brings up the Animation export options box where you are supposed to be able to
select different codecs (according the help notes). Mine shows only "uncompressed" (no other options are listed) and the Quality frame and key frame are grayed out.
The frame rate is active. Configure and About are grayed out.Transparency and Area to save are active.

When I use the uncompressed option P&GD 10 creates an avi file but it will not play in any of the programs - video editors or vlc or windows media player. So currently my
only way to get usable avi files is to export the animation as swf then use a swf-to-avi converter.

Well, I may foul up my computer (won't be the first time) but I will try installing Cinepak and see what happens.

have got 'make background transparent' ticked? - that may mean uncompressed is the only option avaiable

if you have and you untick it, does that fix the codec problem?

if you haven't - tick it and then untick it and check if the codecs have appeared

occurred to me that AVI was never originally designed to have transparent backgrounds and so codecs don't necessarily support it

I tried ticking and unticking both with and without clicking on the 'apply' button. Nothing changed. Uncompressed is the only option available. Here is what the Help manual shows: AVI options, Codec selection
"Use the dropdown list to select from the range of codecs that you have installed. This determines how your AVI is encoded and compressed. Or choose the "uncompressed" option if you want to export an uncompressed AVI. Note that this will give you a very large file size!"

in re codecs installed: I have vlc player, mpc player, windows media player, Corel Video Studio, Cyberlink PowerDirector and Pinnacle video editor installed on my computer. Surely (I would think) one or more of these would have codecs installed for their own use. They all claim to able to handle avi, mpg2, avchd, mp24 and other files. So why am I unable to find any of these with Xara P&GD 10? I also downloaded Cinepak Codec by Radius and when I tried to install it, I kept getting messages that each file was already on my computer. In most instances it showed that the one I already have is newer than the one in the pack. I thank everyone for their attempt to help, whether or not I get the problem solved. Thanks.

I almost forgot....I also ran the install P&GD 10 and selected the 'repair' function. No change.

    Hi again,

    Try this:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/w...ions=windows-7

If you open Windows Media Player & follow these instructions it will tell you what codecs your machine has installed.

Let's know how you get on.

you could try right clicking and running the program as administrator - if this works, only need to do once
