Default How can I get images to not resize AT ALL when inserted into emails (Outlook2010)

    Hi

I need to work on images whereby 1 pixel on screen in Xara ==> 1 pixel on output image (GIF/JPEG/PNGs) ==> 1 pixel visible on HTML email (sent with Outlook2010).

BUT my images keep getting resized - it is driving me NUTS!!

What settings do I need to stop this resizing?

i.e. If I send an HTML email using Outlook2010, then every time I insert an image (GIF/JPEG/PNG) into the body of the email it gets resized (made larger). This appears to be due to my use of a custom DPI size in Windows. And also possibly something to do with the "DPI" that is burnt into the file itself(??)

And no, I do HAVE to work at 120% DPI (ideally higher in fact e.g. 125%?) because I have a high resolution monitor and I cant read the most of the text on the screen if I have it set to 100% !

And no, I do not want to send email attachments (as they will then require the recipient makes an extra click and will then be out of context for the recipient).

And so also in Xara, I want to be able to see my images at 1 pixel per pixel on the screen (using any one of the standard zoom levels e.g. 80, 100 or 125% that comes up when I use the scroll wheel to zoom) ==> 1 pixel on the exported image.

And also to import images into Xara so that that import at EXACTLY 1 pixel on the image ==> 1 pixels on the screen.

Let me recap... In my emails I need to be able to:

    a) Import images (GIFs and JPEGs and PNGs) into the body of the email without the file being physically resized.

    b) Make sure that all the HTML tags in the email do not resize the image either(!) by the time the recipient views it.
i.e. send HTML emails that are correctly sized (e.g. say a 100x200 pixels image ==> 100x200 pixels wide in the email)

...And to make matters worse, every time an image is forwarded to another user it get even larger (due to being resized by 20% using the HTML tags)

    [This is driving me INSANE!]

    Anyhow here is my setup:

    - Windows 7 x64,
Setting: Control Panel ==> Display ==> Set custom text size (DPI) "120%"

    - Xara Designer Pro10x
    Settings: Utilities ==> Options ==> View ==> Bitmaps ==>
    - Never smooth: Ticked
    - DPI when auto-generated: 96%
    - Import all photos at 96dpi (1:1 at 100% zoom)
Settings: Utilities ==> Options ==> Units
    - Page Units: Pixels
Settings: Utilities ==> Options ==> Scaling
    - Use scale factor: Unticked

Do I need to change image DPI size somehow during image exports?

    Any suggestions?

    Many thanks

    J

If all browsers displayed at 96ppi, you would not have this issue. But Mac's display at 72ppi. This is the cause of the images getting larger.

And I have to wonder if part of this is not determined by the settings of the e-mail client.

I don't necessarily agree with Gary's first sentence

However I do with the second.. and remember, you have absolutely no control over how the recipients email client and system is set up... so even if you achieve what you want on your computer it may be somewhat pyrrhic in the sense of not being worth the effort.. because they still might not see what you want at their end

To get clear - forget Apple, the problem seems to be occurring on all-Windows devices. Including when I go into the Sent box on my own computer. i.e. The mere act of pressing Send in outlook seems to cause the file to become stretched.
It also happens when I receive a CC: myself into of my own email.

What seems to be happening is that the image file itself is generally OK, however it is being stretched using the Height and Width tags within HTML. :^/

Personally I have not noticed any problem. I have two email accounts, and sometimes I email something from one to the other as a check and it is always correct. Shiphen, and, Handrawn might be correct so I'll try shiphen's method just to see.

Never give up. You will never fail, but you may find a lot of ways that don't work.

The key to the problem appears to be the fact that (in order to get most of my text in windows) I have had to set my custom text size (DPI) to "120%".

PS. In fact I have now realized that I normally used to use "125%" which windows nowadays calls "medium" (whereas 100% is nowadays called "smaller" AND "default" !) and this means that I can get 1 pixel on a Xara file to render to 1 pixel on my screen if the zoom is set to 80%.

PPS. Please also note that as monitor resolutions increase and increase, that this problem is only going to get worse! For example in order to run Full HD television/video, many laptops now run Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) on screens as small as 11 inches. ...And I thought the text was "rather small" on my 24" screen! So I hate to think what DPI size those users will be having to use (150% ? More?)

So what I am saying is that vast numbers of laptops are already seriously high resolution and this will make 100% DPI textsize more or less unusable. And so all these users will be forced to increase their custom text size DPI. And any of those users trying to insert images into the body of their emails using Outlook2010 or earlier will (presumably) have the same problem as me.

In importing the image there is a option to resize or keep original select the import original. also in the option menu there is (can't remember off-hand where) whether to resize them.

can't see a problem using Thunderbird - so I'm inclined to think it's an Outlook issue and that program I do not have installed to check

bear in mind that when you alter the windows text size different programs deal with it in different ways [in terms of how their UIs respond] - could be this is what is happening here; if so it may be difficult to resolve

Where are you seeing that option?

When I am creating an email, with keyboard focus in the main body of the email, I go:
Insert ==> Picture ==> [select picture, in my case a .JPG]
And immediately the picture that is actually 800px wide is inserted at 640px wide.
Now this does not matter because the email generated still has the tag "<IMG width=800" [blah-blah], and when I save the file to disk from out of the sent email it is still 800 pixels wide and looks fine.

However when I Forward the email, suddenly the image in the email that has been sent has grown in width. The image is now taking up a vast 1248 pixels on the email browser page and worse the actual image file if I save it is now 1000px wide and has become blurred as a result. Looking at the raw HTML code the <IMG> tage has "width=1000" - which in one sense is corrrect as that is the new image file size in pixel width. But why (the heck) has outlook decided to increase the width of the file itself. And how (the heck) can I stop it from doing this (other then changing my text DPI setting that is!)

Is it something to do with the file itself or some weird setting in Outlook or what? (Nobody on an Outlook forum seemed to be able to help with the Outlook side of things, so I am wondering if anyone else here
    who is using Outlook and
who has also changed their text DPI (sure almost everyone, no?) and
who using Xara to create GIFs/JPGs/PNGs
...has managed to solve this problem?

    Or is it just moi?

Afraid I cant help here shiphen

    sure almost everyone, no?
I've never needed or understood the need to do this. I have 2 x 23" monitors and my text is fine. I don't think you'll find many users use this option either.

Let's try to see how many do.

Do you use "Setting: Control Panel ==> Display ==> Set custom text size (DPI) "120%

I don't see any need for this.

I know it's not assisting your question but it sure is creating you problems :\
