need help!

need some help i am new to all this graphics stuff at the moment i am having trouble with linking layers together i have seen in some tutorials that they have a box and they just tick them to link them together please can any 1 help me thanks

One note: you can also select a larger group of layers by selecting the first one and shift clicking on the last one.

In CS2 the link icons now appear to the right of the layer's name.
