Eric: I thought I would have a bit of a play with your method. You can get a pretty good result.
Though, this method does not allow a flat fill on the separate sides. But, it's an excellent mothod to share.

Here is my method that can be adapted for any of the 17 repeat wallpaper groups: Cubic Tessalation.web.
The advantage of the extra effort is the control over the resolution of the bitmap.

Can I ask, why you needed to create a bitmap copy?
Why not use the vector shape(s)?
