"Show guides" is not available in new documents....
If I open a v9 document, I can see the guides I created???

I think you'll find you need to add a guide before the show guides will be available.

show grid/guides > show rulers

Next question - is there a way to set the default page options - a new document always produces a Legal size page with a green outline box, a rule near the bottom of the page and a centred page number. I want my default page always to be A4 and completely blank, with my units always in millimetres and show rulers by defualt.
Ts all works in v9, but not in 10.

Yes, easy. Select New / A4 Landscape. With nothing in the document go to Utilities / Options / Units. Set your units to mm's. Click Ctrl+L to show the rulers. Now go File / Save Template. Name it letsgofishing. If you want this template to open each time you click File / New then tick the "Make Default Template" check box. You can also set a lot of other features here as well such as the default line width, fill colour default zoom factor and font etc etc.
