    Default re-sizing question

Please can someone explain why this is happening?

as a simple example I draw a object 3x5 inches, then copy and paste then increase the copy size 110 % or one dimension by 1 inch with the padlock on the size increment is not equal?

if I draw a shape 3 x 5 inches and with the lock on change the 5 to 6 the 3 changes to 3.6 not 4

the same if with the lock on I change the percentage by 110 on one dimension the other does not increase the same amount.

    why is that ?

if the object is square it does increase all side equally with either method and the lock on , or if i disable the lock and change the dimensions individually be a similar amount then i can achieve a oblong in a oblong with equidistant sides.

    probably me being dumb again

You are referring to the Lock Aspect Ratio icon, the small padlock icon?

When the icon is in the down position it is enabled and will scale the selection proportionately. When it is neither up or down, it is disabled and the selection will scale non-proportionately.

Gary, Mr. Moderator Emeritus Dude, Sir,

thanks, when I said with the lock on i meant with it enabled.

    when enabled the 3x 5 does not become 4 x 6 if you change the 3 to 4 it becomes 4 x 6.67 why?

It appears to be keeping the ratio the same. 3/5 = .6 4/6.67 = .599. Hope this helps.

Alistair, the increment is applied as a ratio:
    • 3 x 5 (ratio 0.6), changing 5 to 6 gives 3.6 x 6 (ratio 0.6).
    • 3 x 5 (ratio 0.6), changing by 110% any dimension gives 3.3 x 5.5 (ratio 0.6).

You unlock the aspect ratio to apply two separate increments.

Correct. But with the lock icon disabled.

Just use Contour, contour width'=1 inch and Number of steps in contour = 1. Then Convert to editable shapes> Ungroup. Done!
    Works with virtually all shapes.
