    Default 3-way fill question

I've been fiddling with a bit and I've not come up with an answer yest. I need to do a 3-way fill, top to bottom. When you select the 3 it does what appears to be a random left to right fill. I haven't see the 3 fill set anywhere. I guess I'm looking in all the wrong places.

What you're looking for is a linear fill, but with an extra step in the middle.

    1. Set up the Linear Fill, and select your starting and ending colors.
    2. Click on your desired middle color on the color bar, and drag it to the line for the linear fill. The small square accompanying the mouse pointer will change to a rectangle.
    3. You can click on the new handle and drag it up or down the line as desired to adjust the position of the middle color.

ad1066, thanks for the input. I'm a bit thick I think. Two things, first when I selected Linear Fill I didn't see anything where I could select the beginning and ending color. Once I nail that I should be good to go.

you need to be in the fill tool and you need to have the object selected and then drag across the object with the mouse - you should get a line with the two fill handles one at each end - you can add a third [or more] as suggested

you can extend the line by dragging one of the end handles

There is also a 3-Color gradient fill (see attached) with a Simple and Repeating fill tiling option. And a 4-color plus a few others.

Are you trying to do a tutorial? And if so, what is the tutorial showing and asking you to do?

linear fill, repeating rather than simple, is useful if your start and finish colours are the same then you can get three colours with only two handles [and thereby can use the profile option too, as Luke pointed out a short while back in another thread, the profile option being available for two handles only]

Gary, no, I'm not doing a tutorial. I'm attempting to fill lettering top to bottome with 3 colors, green, white, red. The colors of the Italian flag. Thanks every one for all the input here. It is most helpful.

    agree with Gary

this is not really a job for the fill tool as you do not want a gradient of colour, just three discrete bands
