is now released, handles multiple accounts. What used to take about 7 miuntes now takes under a minute to download all 4 of my email accounts (I have loads of reciepts stored up on the server). It's better than ever and don't let the word "beta" scare you off, it's a great improvement over the previous version.

    Go here: http://www.mailwasher.net/download.php

Gives you options to delete and bounce unwanted messages off of the server. Has a 'friends' and 'blacklist' option by right clicking on the message. It's a great tool and has many awards!

Egg, you should get a copy of it!! Just a suggestion!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Oh, one more thing is that it's FREE

"Even previewing the message in mail washer can open the virus."

Has this actually happened to you? I have received several virus-laden emails and NONE have passed through MailWasher's preview function.

One thing Gary is [B}IF[/B] you double click on a header in MailWasher it WILL download the message onto your hard drive!!

You don't want to do this, IMHO, unless your very very sure.

I'm thinking that the newer version probably has a way to hook your virus scanner into it. So there's your protection!!

I haven't looked into this because I don't use the program to actually view mail, just to view headers.

I just got a notice today that Big Boss had sent a virus infected message.

MODERATORS, Do you know of anyone in our forum that lives in Seattle or Redmond? Perhaps they could have "Gweedoe" go over and knock on this clown's door.

    Hi All

Virtually all the header records in the Virus generated emails are spoofed. it could come from anybody, the closest you will get to finding the originating PC is the original SMTP post header.

This is buried inside the header records and can only usually be seen in Source Message view.

For example if you right click on a normal email in Outlook and select properties, then in the next dialogue, click on the details tab/ message source.

If you look down the header records you are looking for the last received from: header just above the usual from field. This will show you which email server delivered the message.

Most of the newer virus generated/infected emails have spoofed from: and reply to: fields the best you can do is trace back to the originating email server, chances are it will be an ISP and then the trail goes cold.

This is why you should never bounce or return virus infected emails these days, the chances are you will end up sending the email to an innocent. Just delete them and be thankful it got no further.

The "W32/SoBigA" worm/virus will propagate itself to other machines by appearing to come big@boss.com. If, heaven forbid, I had the virus, many people would be getting emails from my machine appearing to come from big@boss.com and I wouldn't know much about it unless my virus killer flagged it up.

This is one of those viruses that conceals the sender of the virus (like Klez) so you can't email them to say they've got an infected machine http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Have a look at this for more info.

Sometimes I will preview a message if I think it may be legitimate. But if when the message opens and there is nothing there I try to delete it instantly.

But in previewing the message, it automatically starts downloading and sometimes if I am not quick enough on the delete button it gets detected by Norton and I get a warning message.

That rather defeats the purpose of the program doesn't it? One cannot be clair voyant, and I have had many legitament e-mails that I was suspious of because of ill penned subjects.

My ISP provides on line management of e-mail, I can view and delete any message online. The only way I can download it is to open my e-mail program, which currently is Pegasas which also allows online management of e-mail while it is still on the server.

I think you can probably do online management with any ISP provider, most I think do not advertise it, so call them. So a program like Mail Washer is probably not needed, at least not by me.

My ISP uses a service called "Postini" which for $2 per month is both an anti-virus and spam killer. They are alway updating thier virus definition too. If your ISP doesn't have this type of service have them check it out.

but if you are an Outlook or Outlook Express user it is most advisable for sure.

There is a fairly new Email program out there that I just dropped $30.00 on and will wait for it's next release to get 'serious' about using called IcrediMail. It's a new way of basically designing an HTML mail page, complete with emoticons, backgrounds and flashing text (would come in handy for sending out greetings to family and friends instead of those tacky and mostly ugly web ecards) but also gives you the choice of just text. I'm not at all happy with the 'skinning' feature (too too bubbly for my taste) and there are some features like configuring the tool bar and columns and I would like to see a news account capability added to it.

One of the cool features is that it has a MailWasher type of capability built in (but only for the paid for version) and access to many of the extras.

I would not recommend it yet but it looks to be the home email package of the future, IMHO!! Most of us are visually driven and I like getting nice looking emails from friends. I'm not sure what the file type is but I'm betting it's not the native Outlook/Outlook Express file type, and if it is then that's sort of stupid. I can't find where the folders are kept so I'm in the dark about that as well!! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
