In xara x, whenever I try to change the colour of a large bitmap I have created with the "make bitmap copy" (usually above 2000x2000 pixels), nothing happens http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

I am able to apply gradients and transparencies to the bitmap copy but when I try to change it's colour state by clicking on a let's say red (either the fill or outline) the bitmap colours still remain the same.

Can someone please let me know if they have had this problem? It's become quite frustrating since I deal mainly with large pieces (about 3000-6000 pixels) and cannot do any final adjusting with the bitmap colouring which I desparately need http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif Does anyone know if any possible fixes?

Thanks for any help in advance!

from you right click menu or your Arrange pull down menu?

It should work from the Arrange menu. There is a bng that crops up for me from time to time using the right click menu. So I resort to the pull down menus when all else fails.

    Hope that helps you! http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

    Hi Richard,

creating a bitmap works fine (using either method)...

the problem is that the result bitmap can't be coloured. Normally let's say when you select on a bitmap you've made and then click on green on the colour bar you will get a greenscale version of the image. If you then picked blue for the bitmap outline you will get a blue negative on green.

For some reason, I'm not able to change the colour of the bitmap after choosing the colours. It just remains the same, even though the colour icon at the bottom of the left corner indicates that the bitmap has a different coloured fill and outline http://www.talkgraphics.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Has that ever happened to you, and is there possibly a way to fix it so that I can change the colour for large bitmaps?

as i know, you have to change the bitmap to grayscale. then the colourchanges should work.

Yes, there seems to be an upper limit on 'contoning' an image. I've tried it with a 1000 x 1000 pixel created bitmap and it worked fine, but if I went up to 1500 x 1500 pixels it did nowt. Probably some inbuilt limitation.
Couldn't you do the contoning before expanding the image to 2000 x 2000 pixels?

I couldn't get larger files to change either. If I reduced the size, that function would work. Transparency and other functions worked. Maybe describe the result you need since there are many ways to do things. Rich

    Thanks for your replies guys!

rubberswan: how do I change the image to greyscale? The only available options are truecolour + alpha, true colour, 256, 16 and 2.
(please note that I am not using another graphics program).

Egg: Unfortunately I couldn't. Since applying a contoned bitmap untop of or a bitmap (with proper transparencies) can create a whole range of colours/effect that would be just near impossible to recreate with vector shapes. For example, if I wanted to shift the copy of the contoned bitmap (with a 50% transparency setting) over the original artwork just a little to the left to create an 'out of focus' look. If I was able to tweak the bitmap to a bluescale version, it would give me the perfect look I needed.

Rich: pretty much same as above. Sometimes I fool with the stained glass, bleach, contrast, etc... settings to get the desired final look I am seeking... unfortunately I can do it with small bitmaps but not the larger ones.

I remember that in corel xara 2, users were not able to create large bitmaps unless you had to rename a file in the xara folder. Although, this is not a matter of creating large bitmaps but rather, editing them, I was wondering if this would possibly be related to that issue in anyway?

    g-bot,

open the bitmap, go to utilities/bitmap-effects/color depth an change to grayscale.

Yeah it works like that. Interesting.
