Default Outline or border around object

This seems so simple but I have searched for it every way I can think of -

How do I put a nice black outline or border around a single object? One of the searches suggested using the glow from shadow tool but that ends up as a very jagged outline. - jb

jeb, give it a line width.
Or, Clone it, Ctrl-k, make it black fill, increase its size to 102% (or more) and put to the back.

Tried clone - but when I scale it parts of the side disappear while still a lot of the back clone is thick.

Trying to put a line around it is what I am looking for but the only icon I can fine that has to do with line width is on the select tool and the scale line width which is grayed out. - jb

jeb, drop your object into the post and others can have a look too.

Use the contour tool. Set the steps to '1' and the width to whatever you desire.

Had to go look for the contour tool - tried to use it but it does not give me an outline - gives me a piece of the object at top and bottom and sides, not outlined.

Saved it as a .xar but now when I try to upload it I get an error message that says it is an invalid file. Saved as .jpg and here it is. Click image for larger version.

Your object is a bitmap, not a vector path.

The object is a photo I took - now trying to put an outline around it to make it stand out on a flyer. Is the fact that it is a photo the reason it will not let me bring up the file as an attachment even after saving it as a .xar file? - jb

No. A .xar can contain a bitmap without being invalid.

Try adding it to a zip and then attach.
