I should have specified, simple tables.

Create the table first, then add your color bands or boxes.

It's a bass ackwards table for sure, but not that hard.

    4. Name it Box.
    5. Place a text line inside.
    6. Name it Textbox.
    7. In the Names gallery, make Textbox 'stretch' Box.
    8. You now have a stretchy cell.

With more Xara magic you can group these cells into a row where if one grows down the others follow and the converse.
Stack these rows on top of each other, with use of repel text and you have got a table where each cell can be altered to suit for border, colour, font, size, tab, ...

It's a pity we can't add a line or a fill to a text area

++1 Agree. You've motivated me to follow through on my intent to add this to "Dear Xara". With this you could more easily simulate tables, as above. This is what you must do in Visio. It's klutzy, but would be a step in the right direction.

Also, between this and all the numerous other posts on Talkgraphics (do a search) lamenting the lack of native table support, one would hope that this would be an active task high on the priority list for the Xara developers.

Tony, a stretchy box with a soft grouped text line is exactly that.
If you compare an MS cell to this, the major difference is the user interface.

What I have proposed before is Xara enable a Tables folder in the Design gallery where you would copy across an n-columned row with themed colours for background and border.
It would be rudimentary but native Xara and extensible from a "graphics" perspective (no code, etc).

So why can word import the text an get it sorted as paragraphs. But Xara can't ?

    That's a fair question.

It may be that it's processing extra information inside the files that Xara doesn't.

I must investigate your method more carefully! Thanks
Assuming it works OK I'll create a row and put it in my designs folder.

Hello Frank, a little late in the day but if you use the 'find' option in the Design Gallery and typed in 'table' you would have found it in about 10 seconds...
